What is spirituality and how Diya can provide Spiritual Awakening – Session 2

 

A LIGHT TOWARDS VEDIC AND PURANIC MANTRAS

Interviewer: Ok, so that brings us to you, Diya. What is Diya about?

Diya: Well, let’s start with the name: Diya. A diya is a simple clay lamp which is commonly used in eastern antiquity and modern spiritual practice; as a symbolic theme, light is used to banish negative dissonance. 

In a similar vein, we wanted to light the way and make spirituality accessible to everyone–starting with Vedic and Puranic mantras. 

Our ultimate goal is to empower any individual to be able to practice spirituality.

Interviewer: So what does Diya offer someone who wants to “be spiritual”?

Diya: A simple and unobtrusive access point. By creating and organizing a virtual library of mantras by every day goals and motivations (tangible and intangible), Diya gives you complete freedom and flexibility to take control of your own spiritual path in a time-efficient, relevant and accurate manner. 

We have worked with some of the best spiritual scholars to summarize relevant mantras and create easy-to-follow audio recordings that empower you to galvanize the appropriate spiritual energies pertinent to your goals. 

Simply put, creating and following a spiritual path has never been easier.

Interviewer: What was the impetus to start Diya?

Diya: It started with a very common problem of stress. Social, professional…etc. Also, the simple desire to find healthy methods of relief. 

From the physical front, I found myriad solutions. While regular exercise certainly provided a necessary release of endorphins and relief, I still found myself left wanting for mindfulness and mental well-being. My mind was still very much restless. 

Thus, I embarked on a search for more holistic solutions, particularly those catered to fill the void of mindfulness. 

This search for mindfulness solutions led me down, almost inevitably, the path of “spirituality”, which, in this context, I frame as exercises in mindfulness designed to soothe and/or refocus the mind. 

Many of the methods prescribed, such as yoga or meditation, had roots in Eastern Spiritual practice commonly found across Greater India and Tibet. As such, I pivoted my search in mindfulness through the lens of “Eastern Spirituality” to get a better idea of what was out there. 

As you would expect, this opened the door to immense spiritual wealth and resources. Meditation, art, poetry, music, mantras, to name a few, all designed and penned for the explicit reason of mindfulness and higher thinking. 

Unfortunately, I found this spiritual landscape quite difficult to traverse through, not because of the thematic content at hand but rather because of the framing. 

Spirituality & spiritual awakening was too intertwined with orthodox religion and routine. In most cases, I felt I needed a degree in divinity to understand how to practice mindfulness–or, as a shortcut, pay an expensive holy man for a magic fix. 

The idea of reciting something for the sake of routine was not appealing to me–it just seemed boring and pointless. Instead, I was more attracted to the concept of opening my mind to understand a higher concept, whether through art, music, or meditation, regardless of the underlying religious source material. 

For example, in my search, I found the poetry of Sufi Qawwals just as calming and mentally stimulating as the mythology of the Puranas. It is important to note at this point however that such an endeavour is highly personal. What works for you will be different from what works for me, and that’s a good thing. 

Unfortunately in today’s world, political and mechanical forms of religion diverge from core spirituality. Put simply, the messaging is bad, which is a great shame considering the spiritual wealth the East has to offer. 

Spirituality should be something one can enjoy whether it’s performing yoga, meditating, reciting mantras, or reading poetry. 

With regards to Vedic and Puranic Mantras, the current framing before Diya was particularly complicated for an uninitiated practitioner with limited prior knowledge in divinity. It is almost impossible to understand when and why certain mantras are useful. This was a pain point that needed immediate relief, and thus, we decided to light the way with Diya.
