Spirituality at work

How can Spirituality help you at work?

I have to make a confession before I write this article. I am not very spiritual, nor do I practice or preach spirituality. Or so I thought.

As I read these statements out loud to myself and start breaking down what it is to be and practice spirituality, I am questioning whether the above actually holds true given the culture and values at our workplace.

Below are my thoughts on how I believe we can be more ‘spiritual’ in the workplace.

As a coach and leader, I am constantly reminding my team to think and work for themselves. Encouraging them to realize their value and self-worth by thinking and behaving like leaders.

The creation of an environment of trust where team members don’t fear making decisions or thinking out of the box leads to not only a more productive workplace but a much calmer one. Trust me 😉

Treating each other with respect starts with a simple thank you and please. Respectful of someone’s situation leads to a much happier workplace.

Seeing things from another person’s perspective and not making knee jerk reactions to something they may have done packs a powerful punch. This show of empathy only leads to good things. This then leads me on to being mindful at work. Being aware of things we say or do and how they affect others starts with you taking time out to see how others react to you. Mastering this creates a general sense of happiness and good spirit at work. Read this on ways to be more mindful at work – https://www.mindful.org/10-ways-mindful-work/

The realisation that we all need to give ourselves some time alone regularly cannot be overstated. This downtime to recharge your mind and body is a good habit to inculcate.

The last thought I will leave you with is the act of humility. Knowing you’re not the centre of everything and accepting your strengths and weaknesses in the context of the big picture leads to closer teamwork and better workplaces. “Intellectual humility — the simple acceptance that one does not know everything, and that understanding others is preferable to dominating them”

Maybe we are all spiritual in our own small way without knowing it?
